Hemodialysis is a form of renal replacement therapy for patients whose kidneys are unable to perform their functions effectively. During the procedure, the patient’s blood circulates through a dialysis machine and a specialised filter known as a dialyser, which helps remove metabolic waste products and excess fluid from the body. After filtration, the blood is returned to the patient’s body.
At our clinic, hemodialysis is performed as prescribed by a nephrologist and according to an individually tailored treatment plan. Throughout the procedure, healthcare professionals monitor the patient’s well-being, blood pressure, vascular access, and other key health indicators.
Before starting hemodialysis
Before treatment begins, the nephrologist:
- Assesses the need for hemodialysis and the patient’s overall health;
- Reviews laboratory test and examination results
- Establishes an individual treatment schedule and treatment goals;
- Examines and assesses the vascular access;
- Reviews the patient’s medications and potential interactions;
- Explains the procedure, possible risks, and available alternative
- Answers any questions from the patient and their family members
The procedure
Before each procedure, the patient’s well-being and key health indicators are assessed. The duration and frequency of hemodialysis are determined individually by the nephrologist, taking into account residual kidney function, laboratory test results, fluid balance, and the patient’s overall health.
Regular health monitoring
During hemodialysis treatment, the effectiveness of the procedures, the patient’s fluid balance, blood pressure, vascular access function, and laboratory test results are regularly assessed. Depending on the patient’s health, the nephrologist may adjust the dialysis schedule, medication therapy, and other recommendations.
